THE FIRST CARLIST WAR

(1833-1840)

The way to put an end to the problematic political situation after Ferdinand VII died in 1833 was the outbreak of a civil war. The Carlists set out to conquer power supported by broad social bases that were in favour of the Infante don Carlos. This support was clearly evidenced by a war against the monarchy that lasted seven years, but at the same time their limits were as well clearly illustrated, as they did not succeed in winning the fight.
